David Ezell, president of Heart Wind Music, is music director at Christ Unity Church, Columbia, SC. Since 1963 he has been producing arrangements and compositions useful to the musicians he has worked with. During his career as a music director in churches and schools, he has helped every day people know the joy of making music. David has been a church music director since 1983, and served 36 years as a school orchestra director, retiring in 2006.
Highlights of David's church music career include membership on the Music Ministry Team at the Association of Unity Churches International, as well as development of a strong and varied music program for Christ Unity of Columbia. This program includes the eclectic band Southern Light, the choir, children's choir and instrumental ensemble. David enjoys playing keyboards, clarinet and sax, as well as several string instruments, for services.
Highlights of David's teaching career include conducting student orchestras at Carnegie Hall and in Germany, Austria, Canada and the Bahamas. He developed orchestra programs in African-American, urban schools in Columbia and Charleston, and at Benedict College.
In the 1990's David developed an interest in computers, and in musical applications. He became expert at the Macintosh program HyperCard, a predecessor of PowerPoint, and taught teacher recertification classes in interactive mulitmedia.
David is the founding conductor of the Columbia Community Orchestra. 2008 saw the founding of the Unity World Orchestra, which was part of the Sound Connections Conference, sponsored by the Association of Unity Churches International, and held at Unity Village. David Ezell and Chris Foster served as arrangers and conductors of UWO.
David grew up as a Christian Scientist. As an adult has studied spiritual principles taught by Unity, Religious Science and Course in Miracles. He has a Bachelor of Music in Music Education with Emphasis in Viola Performance from Converse College in Spartanburg, SC and a Master of Music in Composition from the University of South Carolina, where he specialized in electronic music.
