This selection is the opening movement of a 40-minute Christmas Cantata, also named "A Child Shall Lead Them." The cantata is written for SATB chorus, Soprano, Alto and Tenor soloists, two instrumental obbligatos, piano, percussion and two narrators. 5 of the 13 movements are also appropriate for Easter.

For the instrumental obbligatos:
The first part can be played by Flute, Oboe, Clarinet (in Bb or A). or Violin.
The second part can be played by Clarinet (in Bb or A), Horn in F, Viola, or Cello.
Alternatively, both parts can be played by a second keyboard.
